The ABC’s of Lawn Care
A lush, green lawn can significantly enhance the curb appeal of your home, which, if you’re hoping to sell your home this summer, is a big deal. But how does one achieve that fluffy-pillow, kelly-green grass like neighbor Jeff’s lawn next door? A few of these will be “duh’s”, but the good news is – it doesn’t take long to get your yard looking like a 10.
- Regular Mowing (“duh”).
One of the simplest ways to keep your lawn looking its best is through regular mowing. Mow your lawn at the right height—typically, this means keeping the grass between 2.5 and 3.5 inches tall. Cutting the grass too short can stress the lawn and make it more susceptible to weeds and disease. Additionally, be sure to keep your mower blades sharp to ensure clean cuts.
- Proper Watering (another “duh”)
Watering your lawn correctly is crucial for maintaining its health and appearance. It’s best to water deeply and infrequently, encouraging deep root growth. Aim for about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, delivered in one or two watering sessions. Watering early in the morning reduces evaporation and fungal growth, helping your lawn stay hydrated and healthy.
- Fertilization
This one is actually often overlooked. Fertilizing your lawn provides essential nutrients that promote strong growth and vibrant color. Use a high-quality, slow-release fertilizer and follow the recommended application schedule for your grass type. Typically, lawns benefit from fertilization in the spring and fall. Be mindful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive growth and increased vulnerability to pests and diseases.
- Aeration
Aeration involves creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots more effectively. This process helps alleviate soil compaction and promotes healthier root systems. Aerate your lawn at least once a year, preferably in the fall or spring, to keep the soil loose and well-aerated.
- Weed Control
Weeds can quickly detract from the appearance of your lawn. Implement a weed control strategy that includes both pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides. Pre-emergent herbicides prevent weed seeds from germinating, while post-emergent herbicides target existing weeds. Regularly inspect your lawn for weeds and remove them promptly to maintain a pristine look.
